RAINY DAY WEDDING PHOTOS SCOTLAND
If Alanis Morissette’s most famous song is to be believed then rain on your wedding day is a bad thing.
Don’t listen to her – I mean, do listen to her, Ironic is a tune – just, y’know, don’t take her lyrics to heart. We love a rainy wedding day.
RAINY WEDDING AT KILCHURN CASTLE
If you’re getting married, or planning to elope, in Scotland then you’ll drive yourself absolutely bonkers if you worry about the weather. We remind all our couples that what will be will be, and if you prepare for all four seasons in one day you’ll be fine. No, really. You’ll be fine.
Luckily Hannah and Ben took our advice and were completely chilled out. Which was lucky as their September day threw everything it could at them – from howling winds to pissing sideways rain and a touch of sunshine. The weather gods certainly left us all guessing. That’s Scottish weather for you!
Hannah and Ben had made an epic journey up from Cornwall to get married at Kilchurn Castle. Joined by their two dogs, Eric and Daisy, along with two of their best buddies they were super excited for their Scottish elopement adventure.
They were staying at a local cottage, and we joined them that morning just as the rain started hammering down. The three of us – me (Sarah) on photos, Jenna Clayton who was our fab hair and makeup artist and the lovely videographer, Stevie from Journal Wedding Films – are seasoned Scottish wedding suppliers, so we were full of reassurance. We were all laughing and joking as within minutes the sun came out and the rain stopped. That set a pattern for the day. Rain, wind, sun. Repeat.
We were all having such a great time getting ready that we ended up being a little late leaving to head to the ceremony. No bother, that’s one of the joys of an elopement, we can all be a little more relaxed. It also worked out well as we left just as the sun came out. Result! I was so confident that I sent our celebrant ahead with the umbrellas.
wedding in the rain scotland
Well, turns out I’d been a little too cocky. I’d forgotten the one golden rule for Scottish weddings…
“Be prepared”
And, you guessed it, the heavens opened. It was just a wee walk down from the car to the ceremony spot but we were soaked. Absolutely soaked. And when you’re that wet you’ve just gotta roll with it. You can’t get any wetter.
Everyone was still cheery AF though, these guys were superstars. There’s something so absurd about people all dressed up in fancy clothes and heading out into such wild weather, we were all just cracking up laughing.
We thought that the rain was going to be the worst the weather could throw at us that day. Oh reader, how wrong we were. As they got to the quaich it started hailing. I kid you not. Actual hail stones into the cup. Cue more laughter as we joked the hail was ice for their whisky.
And then, just as we’d gotten used to the extremes, Hannah and Ben said “I do” and the sun came out. The rest of the day was glorious, we were treated to sunshine and rainbows. The light in the community gardens was gorgeous, in that way that it only ever can be after the rain. We were all still absolutely sodden, but the day was so worth it. These photos tell a story and Hannah and Ben will look back and remember their amazing wedding, the crazy weather and the way we all laughed our way through it.
TOP TIPS TO HAVE THE BEST RAINY WEDDING DAY EVER ...
Be prepared – we cannot stress this enough. Even if on the day of your wedding the sun is splitting the sky, bring umbrellas. Stick some sturdy boots in your car. The weather can change so quickly
Enjoy the adventure – embrace whatever the day throws at you. Whether it’s super sunny, pouring down with rain or blowing a gale. This is your wedding. Have fun with it all.
Be prepared – so important we’re saying it twice. Brollies, coats, suncream, boots…
Be flexible – plans may not work out quite as you’d hoped. But we’ve got your backs. If we really can’t use a location due to the weather (and that’s rare) then between us all we’ll get Plan B sorted.
Embrace the elements – yeah your hair might get wet, and you may have to hold your kilt down to prevent any, ahem, mishaps when the wind is blowing, but who cares! Laughter and dramatic skies are an ace combination for incredible photos.
